So, I've been wanting to build several things for the shop, a Cyclone dust collector is on the list as well as a ceiling mount air cleaner. I have seen one process on the net here but I would like some other ideas, mostly about the fan/blower. What or where would I find a blower for a standard air cleaner? Does anyone here know? How about a couple of range hood fans, would that be enough CFM I wonder? I can buy the the filters at Lee Valley for around $40 for the 6 pocket filter and the other can be a simple furnace filter I think. ![]() This is the layout I'm thinking of, but I just need the blower. As most of you know by know, I'm cheap and I like to build things myself so this and the cyclone should be no surprise. Anyone have any ideas or help? |

I made one and gave up on it. I then bought one from Grizzly. An investment. It really helps. You do want to be able to move the volume of your shop about 6 to 8 times and hour. Your health is worth every cent. Blower fans and such do not have the power. Save your time and money and buy one allready made. You need alot of cu ft / min john hall |

John, I've been thinking about that and my shop is only 185 sft, so if I even what to clear the air 10 times per hour, I would only need 250 CFM (minimum) I was thinking of using two range hood fans, they are about 250 CFM each, I'll try it I think and if it doesn't work, than I'll probably buy one. Thanks though Anyone else? |

Rod You have to understand that that rate is figured in open flow. When you put a 20 micron filter with a 5 mircon flow bag you will kill that flow and those fans don't have that kind of power. You need a good 1/2 to 3/4 hp squirell fan. They have the power but till you go and spend that hind of money along with the time you can buy something that is engineered and box ready. I have a large shop 24 by 40 2 floors and the unit for my shop was $200. Worth every cent and then some. I know it can be fun making your own stuff but the one I made cost about $40 more than the one I bought and works 10 times better , and I ain't no slouch. I think what makes the bought unit so much better is 1 remote control and on a timer 2 the fan though a squirel fan has a different blade 3 the filters are comercially available and designed for air cleaners , not furnaces 4 the inside 5 micron filter bags make this a 2 stage filter and the flow is speed is adjustable in 3 speeds for when I am working and putting dust in the air and other speeds for just filtering air and a third speed I can run after I leave to clean the air and keep alot of dust from settling. Sometimes cheaper costs more john hall |

I agree John. I also need a real solution for the dust. In the mean time I use the shop vac (with disposible bag) on or near the tool as possible. A 20 x 20 box fan with a micron furnace filter in front of it runs most of the day and certainly picks up a lot of pretty fine dust. I also wear the better grade of 3M dust mask with the purge valve and two rubber straps. Last week I opened the garage door and used the leaf blower to clear out the corners but it's a losing battle. Sometimes you just HAVE to buy a new tool! ![]() Kurt |

Ron, also look at the Delta AP200. On Amazon it is $170 and free shipping . I have been using mine since last spring and I'm very happy with it. |

Following on John's comments, besides.... to make these truly worthwhile they need to trap 1 micron particles. I have read a good bit about dust and the smallest particles are the ones that can be the most damaging. I have a delta, it is very nice. My only real complaint about it is the noise. |

Rod, depending on your shop's size, you might want to check at Lee Valley for the small air cleaner they sell for 149$ that will filter a room 18'x15'x 8', 6-10 times /hour. Serge |

if you have to buy your bag filter and blower it is a lot easier and just about as cheap to by the complete unit. i stumbled on to four(yes 4) delta bag filters on a lowes clearance table a few years back at $5 each and was given a couple of very strong furnace blowers which really move air. one is even a four speed unit. so building the air cleaners was a simple decision. furnace blowers are often available free or at very little cost from hva contractors. |
I hear great things about the JDS units...available at Woodcraft and other places.
I have one, and think it's great. On high it creates a noticible breeze in my shop (it's a very small shop), and on low the sound is not terribly distracting. I think it'd be hard to match the quality and pricepoint (factoring in labor time) on your own. I love the remote control, and the ability to run it on a timer for awhile after I leave the shop. |
